Sambalpur is located in the western part of Odisha, and is one of the largest and oldest cities in the state. It is the headquarters of Northern Revenue Division and of Mahanadi Coalfield Limited (MCL). It is situated about 300 km (190 mi) west of the state capital Bhubaneswar, 550 km (340 mi) west of Kolkata in West Bengal and 278 km (173 mi) east of Raipur in Chhattisgarh. It is on the bank of the Mahanadi River. In sambalpur district large sections of tribal communities are residing among them Oraon, Kisan, Sabar, Kharia, Munda Tribes are important.They speak their own Mother tongues. These tribes together constitute 50-60% of total population of this distict. Languages spoken here include Asuri, an Austroasiatic language spoken by approximately 17 000.Oraon and kisan tribes usually speak Kurukh and Sadri .Munda tribe speak their own Munda language.Kharia use their own Kharia language and Bhunjia, spoken by approximately 7000 Bhunjia Adivasis. Languages spoken in Sambalpur, Burla & Hirakud is Sambalpuri Odia . Other communities speak Hindi and in their own language.90% population speaks Sambalpuri Odia. The District covering a geographical area of 6702 sq km lies between 20 degree 40 to 22 degree 11 North Latitude and 82 degree 39 to 85 degree 15 East Longitude.
